Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—Christian Duarte scored 2:05 into overtime to give CSU Bakersfield a 2-1 victory over the University of San Francisco Thursday night. The triumph marked the 200th career win for Roadrunner head coach Richie Grant.
Sean Bowman scored with 33 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Dons (2-7) the lead. The Roadrunners were awarded a penalty kick in the 62nd minute after the Dons were called for a foul inside the USF goalkeeper's box. Julian Zamora converted on the attempt to tie the score.
CSUB survived a USF threat in the 71st minute when Jesus Del Toro's shot hit the cross bar and bounced out past the 18-yard mark. A Roadrunner cross nearly was put in by a San Francisco defender in the 80th minute, but the Don were able to keep the ball off the goal line. CSUB had three consecutive corner kicks in the 83rd minute. On the first attempt, Samuel Zimmerman's header went high. USF knocked the second out of bounds before a second Zimmerman attempt was saved by Andre Glasnovic.
Duarte's game winner was the lone shot of the extra period. The preseason Hermann Trophy candidate put back an Adam Arana rebound past Glasnovic for his third goal of the season.
“Out program responded very well after giving up a soft goal right before halftime,” Grant said. “We were pleased for Chris to score the gamewinning goal.”
Grant becomes the 50th active Division I head coach with at least 200 career victories. In his 19th season as a head coach, Grant is 200-154-31 on the collegiate sidelines. The Roadrunners outshot the Dons 14-6 (5-2 on goal) and held an 8-4 corner kick advantage.
The Roadrunners (2-2-2) will begin Western Athletic Conference play Wednesday night when the Roadrunners travel to San Antonio, Texas for a 7:30 p.m. (CDT) matchup against UIW.
“We can approach the WAC schedule with some confidence and we know we will continue to improve,” said Grant.
