Colorado College Holds Off CSUB Women's Soccer

Box Score

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-- Sabrina Delgado's second-half goal setthe CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team up for a chance to win on Friday evening. Alas, the Roadrunners suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Colorado College Tigers at Stewart Field.

“I can applaud the effort and the work rate of our team, but, we are all disappointed to leave here empty-handed,” said Gary Curneen, Head Coach of the 'Runners. “Our team is putting a lot into these games and when we fix our team defending at key times, we will start to see the rewards.”

Colorado College (2-5-1) jumped to a quick, 1-0 lead with a fifth-minute goal from Lauren Milliet. The freshman midfielder connected on a cross from Sarah Schweiss for her second goal of the season. The 'Runners responded with a bit of pressure to close the first half, but a flat start found CSUB trailing at halftime.

The second half would not remain scoreless for long as CSUB capitalized on a corner kick in the 48th minute. Freshman Madi Giammona took the corner and found Delgado's head. Bakersfield's midfielder struck the ball well and watched it float to the back of the net for the equalizer.

The Tigers responded 11 minutes later with a corner kick goal of their own. Madison Tominello sent in the ball and found Milliet for her second goal of the game. Colorado College took a 2-1 lead with just the final 30 minutes remaining.

In the 85th minute, Delgado had the ball fall to her feet just outside of the 18-yard box. The freshman connected with a strong right foot on a shot that sailed just high. Despite being unable to find her second equalizer of the match, the midfielder was the only field player to play all 90 minutes for CSUB. Another outstanding effort by Delgado showed her stamina as the freshman is second on the team in minutes played (582).

Madi Giammona was outstanding and it was great to see Sabrina Delgado get a goal that her play deserved,” said Curneen. “We will dust ourselves down and get ready for Sunday.”

Giammona came off of the bench and registered her first assist in 54 minutes played on Friday. CSUB also received solid bench play from Tori VandeHoef, Morgan Cole, and Coral Lake, each of whom played at least 60 minutes. Redshirt senior Tori Ornela collected a season-high seven saves in the match. The goalkeeper's career total is now at 286 as Ornela marches closer to the 300-save milestone.

The 'Runners (1-5-1) will conclude their road trip Sunday afternoon with a second match in Colorado. CSUB will travel to take on Air Force with the first touch scheduled for 12 p.m. (MDT). Just as on Friday, the Mountain West Network will have a free video feed of the game.
