'Runners Remain Unbeaten After Hard-Fought Draw

Box Score

CHENEY, Wash.-- A physical battle between two unbeaten teams ended after 110 minutes as CSU Bakersfield's women's soccer team drew against Eastern Washington Friday evening. The Roadrunners (1-0-1) and Eagles (2-0-1) fought through both overtime periods and settled on a 1-1 draw.

“Tonight was an unbelievable game and I'm so proud of the team for sticking together and getting a result,” said Gary Curneen, Head Coach of the 'Runners. Curneen's young group of student-athletes continues to represent CSUB well despite featuring eight underclassmen in the starting XI. The young 'Runners did not cower in front of an EWU program that came into the match with a 2-0-0 record.

Both teams were able to apply ample pressure on the opposing defenses throughout the first half. The Eagles narrowly outshot the 'Runners 7-6 in the opening 45 minutes before both sides went to the locker room even at 0-0.

CSUB came out firing in the second half with two shots on goal in the opening ten minutes. The Eagles staved off both attempts, but the action was not over by any means. Both teams traded shots throughout the half, but neither manageed to break through until the 87th minute.

A deep ball played in by the 'Runners glanced off of the crossbar. In the scramble, the ball fell to the feet of sophomore Maja Green who put the ball in the back of the net. The Swedish forward gave CSU Bakersfield a late 1-0 lead on her second goal of the season, but the drama was not over.

With 10 seconds remaining in regulation, EWU's Chloe Williams received a nicely slotted pass and sent the ball to the bottom corner of the net. Williams' last-second heroics prevented a nearly-sealed CSUB victory and pushed the match to overtime.

The 'Runners continued to apply pressure to the Eagles' defense, taking three shots in the opening five minutes of overtime, but could not score. The rest of both overtime periods continued with physical play while CSUB and Eastern Washington concluded the match in a 1-1 draw.

“We thought we had the game won, but credit to Eastern Washington for never giving up,” Curneen said after the match. “Their late goal was a tough pill to swallow, but our commitment and determination in overtime was phenomenal. For a young team like us, this game is invaluable in our development.”

Redshirt senior Tori Ornela posted four saves in the 1-1 draw Friday night. The native of Lemoore, Calif. came into the match tied with former 'Runners Kym Gause (2009-11) with 260 career saves, the most all-time for CSUB. Ornela now holds the record outright (264) and will likely put a large gap between herself and Gause by the end of the season.

CSU Bakersfield remains unbeaten (1-0-1) through its opening two matches, a feat the 'Runners have not accomplished since 2009. The Bulldogs of Gonzaga will attempt to end CSUB's streak of results Sunday afternoon when the Roadrunners travel to Spokane for the second game of their road trip. The match is set to kick off at 1 p.m. and links to live video and live stats can be found on the CSUB women's soccer schedule page.
