Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—David Metzgar (So., Lancaster, Calif., Paraclete HS) went for 4-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored to lead CSU Bakersfield past UC Riverside 10-0 Tuesday night.
“David plays hard, he's a great defensive player, and he can hit,” said CSUB head coach Bill Kernen.
Metzgar's one-out double in the bottom of the third plated Logan Trowbridge (Sr., Santa Cruz, Calif., College of San Mateo ) and Jordie Hein (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) to give the Roadrunners the lead. Mylz Jones (Jr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) added an RBI single later in the inning to make it 3-0.
UC Riverside (10-19) loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth. CSUB starter Alec Daily (So., Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) struck out the Highlanders No. 3 hitter, Vince Fernandez, for the final out.
CSUB sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth as the Roadrunners scored seven times. CSUB received RBI's from five different players in the inning.
Daily, Garrett Nimmo (So., Temecula, Calif., Temecula Valley HS), AJ Monarrez (R-Jr., Hawthorne, Calif., Glendale College), Nick Dermenjian (Sr., Fair Oaks, Calif., American River College), and Matthew Franco (Fr., Rosamond, Calif., Desert Christian HS), combined on a seven-hitter. Beginning with Nimmo, the CSUB relievers retired 12 in a row before a two-out UCR hit in the ninth.
“Daily needs innings,” Kernen said. “That's why we've taken him to the midweek. He needs to throw strikes, when he does that he is very effective. We wanted to see an inning from a bunch of guys to keep them sharp.”
Mylz Jones (Jr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) went 2-for-5 with two RBI's. Joey Sanchez (So., Pico Rivera, Calif., El Rancho HS) was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Chance Gusbeth (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) drove in two runs. Mark Contreras and Austin Colvin both went 2-for-3 to lead UC Riverside.
“We did what we have been talking about and getting timely hits,” Kernen said. “We got it rolling in the fifth inning and now it's a matter of doing it every day for a period of time.”
CSUB (14-14-1) travels to the University of North Dakota for a three-game WAC series that gets underway on Thursday at 2 p.m. (CDT).
“North Dakota played us pretty tough last season,” Kernen said. “I'm sure we will have our hands full.”
The Roadrunners return home Apr. 10 to open a three-game series against Texas-Pan American. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Tickets are available at Vallitix.com.
