Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield pitchers Steven Gee (So., Taft, Calif., Taft Union HS) and Alec Daily (So., Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) combined on a five-hitter as the Roadrunners defeated Wagner 10-1 Saturday night.
Gee went the first seven innings, striking out six, giving up the five Seahawks' hits. Gee retired 10 in a row at one point. After throwing 106 pitches, 62 for strikes, Gee gave way to Daily who entered the game in the eighth. The 6-3 lefty did not allow a hit. Daily struck out two and walked two.
“Steven did a good job after struggling with his command early on,” said CSUB head coach Bill Kernen.
Wagner started the game with three consecutive hits, resulting in a Ben Ruta RBI single. A Wagner error on an apparent double play in the bottom of the first led to three CSUB runs. The Roadrunner rally was highlighted by a Mylz Jones (Jr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) two-RBI single.
The Roadrunners added two in the bottom of the second on another Wagner error and a sacrifice fly from Joey Sanchez (So., Pico Rivera, Calif., El Rancho HS). CSUB's sixth run came from Cody White (So., Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) who drove in Jones with a single in the bottom of the third. CSUB scored a single run in the sixth and added three more in the eighth.
“We got some help from them defensively,” Kernen said. “We have five offensive goals in each game and we met them tonight. It was a good effort. We've won the series, but we want to go out and sweep the series on Sunday.”
Jones paced the Roadrunners by going 3-for-5 with two RBI's. Sanchez stayed above .500 for the season (.545) as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI's. David Metzgar (So., Lancaster, Calif., Paraclete HS) was 2-for-4. Nick Dini was the lone Seahawk with multiple hits as he posted a 2-for-4 performance.
The 'Runners (8-6) have won five in a row and look to sweep the series finale from the Seahawks (0-4-1) Sunday at noon. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. Tickets are available at Vallitix.com.
