IOWA CITY, Iowa-- The 2015 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships got out to a slow start for CSU Bakersfield's lone representative, Mitchell Huxhold (Sr., Escondido, Calif., San Pasqual HS). The Roadrunner senior failed to qualify for the finals of the 500 freestyle Thursday morning.
“This is Mitchell's third taper, which is tough in these events,” said Chris Hansen, Bakersfield's Director of Swimming. “He looked great the first half of the race and then tightened up and started over-swimming. We got the first swim over with and we are ready for the next two!”
Huxhold's time of 4:23.11 placed the California native 51st in the preliminary rounds. The senior posted a season best time of 4:17.37 to win the Western Athletic Conference Championship at the end of February.
With two swims remaining at the NCAA Championships, Huxhold's season is long from over. The Roadrunner swimmer will tackle the 200 freestyle Friday morning before concluding his collegiate career on Saturday in the mile.
