BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Jaylin Airington scored 17 points and secured his first career double-double with 10 rebounds as the CSUB Roadrunners dealt with a hot-shooting Bristol University team while earning a 95-81 non-conference victory at the Icardo Center.
“Mission accomplished,” said CSUB head coach Rod Barnes. “We wanted to get some guys some playing time and we were able to do that and get the win…I told our guys we now have a couple of days to get back to do what we do and do that well.”
The Roadrunners closed out the home portion of their schedule while improving to 9-5 at home this season. CSUB is now 193-29 all-time at the Icardo Center.
CSUB trailed early but then took the lead for good with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half when Cortez Conners (Jr., St. Louis, MO., St. Louis CC) hit the go-ahead three-pointer.
Bakersfield would lead by 15 at the half sparked by 15 from Airington and 10 from Aly Ahmed (Jr., Alexandria, Egypt, Midland CC). Ahmed would play just five minutes in the second half as the Roadrunners built a 21-point lead on two occasions. WAC leading-rebounder Kevin Mays (Jr., Queens N.Y., Odessa CC) did not play in the game due to illness.
Bristol managed to make it interesting in the second half with a superb shooting effort converting on 18-of-30 in the half and 7-of-13 from three-point range. Brandon Chavers led the scoring with 24 points on 8-of-20 from the field and 6-of-14 from three-point range. Tade Keshishyan added 20 for the Bears an USCAA and NCCAA affiliated program out of Orange, Calif.
“We expected for these guys to shoot the ball well and they did, they're a good scoring team,” Barnes said about Bristol. “I didn't think our defense was that focused, I just think it was one of those games we got caught up in trying to outscore them instead of being who we are.”
The Roadrunners had four players in double figures as Tyrell Corbin (Sr., Columbia, S.C., Salt Lake CC) added 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting in his Icardo Center finale. Conners had 11 for the Roadrunners while CSUB managed a solid offensive night shooting 46% from the field (28-of-61) and 36% from three-point range (9-of-25). CSUB outrebounded the Bears 47 to 24 including 21 offensive rebounds which led to 22 second-chance points for the 'Runners who scored the most points since scoring 99 in their season-opening loss to High Point at the Outrigger Classic in Hawai'i.
CSUB will head to Seattle U on Saturday night in another important game that will help further-cement seeding in the upcoming WAC Tournament.
“We have to look at it as one of the biggest games because it puts us in a second-place rank, that's where we want to be and getting that seed is important,” Barnes said. “We have to go up there but we've been winning so winning breeds winning and that's going to be our biggest thing to go up there and play as well as we can and keep moving forward.”
Saturday's game will be televised live on the American Sports Network; radio coverage will be available on Newstalk 1180 & 96.1 FM KERN. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 P.M.
