Box Score SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Three Cal Poly pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the Mustangs defeated CSU Bakersfield 13-2 Tuesday night.
“Obviously we are disappointed with the result, but we did get a lot from this game,” said CSUB head coach Bill Kernen.
Zack Zehner's RBI ground out in the bottom of the first put the Mustangs on top 1-0. Cal Poly scored five times in the second, highlighted by Alec Smith's two-RBI single. CSUB got on the board in the third when Soloman Williams (Sr., Long Beach, Calif., Golden West College) singled in Max Carter (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) and Joey Sanchez (So., Pico Rivera, Calif., El Rancho HS).
Cal Poly added one in the bottom of the third when Mark Mathais smacked an RBI double. The Mustangs would score twice more in the fifth. A CSUB error and a pair of passed balls led to four unearned runs for Cal Poly in the eighth.
Peter Van Gansen was 4-for-6 with three RBI's to lead Cal Poly. Mathais and Jordan Ellis both charted two hits and each scored three times. Mustang starter Andrew Bernstein went seven innings, striking out eight. Nick Sunga retired the 'Runners in order in the eighth before giving way to Jarred Zill who had a scoreless ninth.
