BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—On a night in which the fans enjoyed “Dinner and a Dual” with the CSU Bakersfield wrestling team, the Roadrunners came away with a 20-12 victory over San Francisco State. “Dinner and a Dual” served as a fundraiser for the CSUB program in which fans enjoyed a three-course meal sitting along the mat in the Icardo Center.
The dual opened at 184 pounds where the Gators' Johnny Costa defeated Sean Pollock (R-Sr., Oceanside, Calif., Rancho Buena Vista HS) 10-5. Matt Williams (R-Fr., Apple Valley, Calif., Sultana HS) rallied from a 5-0 first period deficit to defeat Andrew Reggi 8-6 in overtime of the 197-pound bout.
Sam Alnassiri and Steven Wood (R-Jr., Lemoore, Calif., Lemoore HS) needed three overtimes before Alnassiri got an escape to earn a 2-1 victory at heavyweight. At 125, Sergio Mendez (So., Arleta, Calif., San Fernando HS) put the 'Runners back into the lead with a 9-0 major decision over Brand Vu. Ian Nickell (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) put CSU Bakersfield up 10-6 with a 5-4 victory over Jordan Gurrola at 133 pounds.
San Francisco State closed to within one when Daniel Flores defeated Zach Zimmer (R-Sr., Fresno, Calif., Indiana Univ.) 5-1 in the 141-pound bout. Coleman Hammond (R-Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) responded for the Roadrunners at 149 with a 15-2 major decision against Tavis Ino.
Alex Abono defeated Spencer Hill (R-Sr., Clovis, Calif., Fresno City College) 4-3 in the 157-pound match to make it 14-12. Adam Fierro's (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) second period escape proved to be the only point scored in his 165-pound bout against Vicente Aboytes and gave CSUB a five-point lead. Bryce Hammond (R-Sr., 174, Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) ended the dual in favor of the Roadrunners when he earned a 5-1 victory against Peter Santos.
“There is no doubt that they are a good team,” said CSUB head coach Mike Mendoza. “I think we could have performed better than we showed. Sergio and Vu had an exciting match. He is getting better each time out. We felt confident having Adam and Bryce in the final two matches to get wins to finish it off.”
The Roadrunners travel to Cal Poly on Thursday for a 3 p.m. match that will take place in outside on the Cal Poly campus. CSUB returns home for the final time this season Feb. 11 when the 'Runners host Cal Baptist at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at vallitix.com.
