BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- While the Roadrunners celebrated the careers of five men's swimmers on Senior Day at the Hillman Aquatics Center, Tyler Greenwald (So., Henderson, Nev., Coronado HS) stole the show. The sophomore diver broke the school record with a massive personal best on the 3-meter board on Sunday as the 'Runners cruised past UC Santa Cruz by a score of 222-70.
“It's definitely huge, being number one all-time,” said Ben Herboth, CSUB's Diving Coach. “I'm super proud of Tyler and know he's only scratching the surface of what he is going to be able to do. Hopefully this performance will give him the confidence he needs going into conference.” Greenwald's Head Coach, Chris Hansen, was also impressed by the sophomore's performance: “To break the record in season at a dual meet is fantastic. That will probably set him up to make the NCAA Zones. In years past, diving has killed us, but every meet we have had this year, it has helped us.”
Greenwald posted a score of 333.45 on the 3-meter board which smashed his previous best (291.15), sailed by the CSUB record (Troy Neklason, 2012 - 328.25), and is the second highest score in the Western Athletic Conference this season. Greenwald also finished first on the 1-meter board with a score of 293.70 which moves him into fourth all-time for CSUB in the event.
After celebrating Greenwald's accomplishment, the 'Runners continued to swim well against UCSC as they sent their seniors off with a big win. “It's better sweet, it's really sad to see these seniors go,” said Hansen. “They all swam well today. It was nice to see them all swim fast on their last meet. It was a good win. I'm proud of them.”
The 'Runner seniors who swam their last home meet on Sunday are Gabriel Bertrand, Dennis Cassidy, Tony Daly, Mitchell Huxhold, and Justin Young. Huxhold led the way, as usual, picking up two individual wins including one in the 50 free which he swam for the first time this year. Bertrand swam well in the mile, finishing in a time of 16:32.59 to finish off a 1-2-3 sweep for the 'Runners. Cassidy, Daly, and Young all impressed as well in their final meet.
“Mihael Vukic had a great meet today,” said Hansen. “He won three events and I was really impressed.” Vukic (So., Zabok, Croatia, Louisville) took the 100 free (46.48), 200 free (1:44.40), and 100 fly (50.60) on Sunday before leading his team to a win in the 200 free relay (1:27.62).
Carson May (Jr., Covina, Calif., Damien HS) swam well to win the 1650 in a time of 15:54.78 which lowered his season best time and is the seventh fastest time in the WAC this season. Bryant Fascio (Fr., Los Angeles, Calif., Rancho Cucamonga HS) finished second with a time of 16:12.65 which is just tenths of a second outside the Top 10 in the WAC.
The 'Runner men will start their preparations for the WAC Championships which will take place Feb. 25-28 in San Antonio, Texas.
