BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--The Bakersfield women's soccer team opens the WAC schedule Saturday at Grand Canyon.
This is the 16th time that Bakersfield (1-8-1) and Grand Canyon are playing with the 'Runners holding a 11-3-1 all-time series advantage. The Roadrunners were 0-1-1 last seaon against the 'Lopes. CSUB tied 1-1 against Grand Canyon in Phoenix before the Antelopes defeated the 'Runners 1-0 in Bakersfield.
Grand Canyon's Maria Monterroso was named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 14-21. Monterroso scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season to help Grand Canyon to a 2-1 win over Idaho on Friday. She ranks second in the WAC in goals per game (0.71) and is tied for third in the conference with five goals on the season. Monterroso has scored five of the seven GCU goals this season. The 'Lopes are 1-6-1 after splitting a pair of matches at home last weekend.
Bakersfield goalie Tori Ornela (R-Jr., Lemoore, Calif., Lemoore HS) continues to climb the 'Runner school record book. Ornela is now second in saves (205), third in minutes played (3841). She is seventh in victories (9), and ninth in goals against average (1.85) and ninth in career shutouts (3). Ornela began the week 20th in Division I in saves (54).
