BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--The undefeated Bakersfield men's soccer team (3-0) travels to UC Riverside Thursday night before playing the program's first home game in 2014 against UC Davis Saturday night. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
Bakersfield and UC Riverside are playing for the 10th time with the Roadrunners leading the all-time series 5-1-3. CSUB and UCR tied 1-1 last season in Bakersfield.
The Highlanders are 1-2 after losing a pair of one-goal matches at the New Mexico Invitational last weekend.UC Riverside lost 1-0 to No. 6 New Mexico and 2-1 in overtime to American which was coming off a victory over then No. 1 UCLA. Michael Salazar leads the Highlanders in goals (3), points (7), and shots (13).
The Roadrunners are playing UC Davis for the 18th time with Bakersfield leading the all-time series 9-5-3.
The Aggies are 1-0-3, playing back-to-back 1-1 ties last weekend against Loyola Marymount and San Diego. UC Davis goalie Kris Schultz has played every minute this season and has allowed three goals (0.64 GAA) and has made 10 saves. Matt Sheldon leads the Aggies in goals (2) and points (5).
Julian Zamora (R-Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Golden Valley HS) was named WAC Offensive Player of the Week ending Sept. 7. Zamora led all WAC players with four goals in two matches during the week.
Bakersfield beat Howard, 5-0, on Friday and then IPFW on Sunday, 3-0. Zamora came off the bench in both matches to score two goals in each. Against Howard, he had five shots, three on goal, and then scored on his only two shots against IPFW on Sunday.
Zamora was named the Outstanding Offensive Player of the Tournament at the Johann Memorial Classic in Las Vegas. He was also selected WAC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness for his efforts.
