BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- Austin Davis became the second-highest Roadrunner baseball player drafted when the left hander was selected in the 12 round by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 352nd overall pick in the MLB First-Year Player Draft on Saturday.
Joining Davis was fellow lefthander Taylor Aikenhead who was selected in the 32nd round by the San Diego Padres with the 957th overall pick.
Davis was 4-9 this season with a 4.03 earned run average while striking out 68 batters and allowing opponents to hit .268 against him this season. The 6'4” 245-pound lefthander attracted several MLB scouts at every start this season given his size and frame.
Davis' 12th-round selection was the second-highest in program history behind Scott Brattvet who was selected in the 8th round last season by the Cincinnati Reds. This is the program's first selection by the Phillies organization.
Aikenhead, who served as the Friday night starter for the Roadrunners this season posting an 8-7 record with a 3.07 ERA. The senior concluded his CSUB career with a complete-game 4-1 win over Sacramento State at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament last month. Aikenhead threw 107 pitches in the outing while allowing just seven hits and striking out two.
Aikenhead will leave CSUB with a 19-12 record, the second-most wins in program history. This marks the second time a Roadrunner has been selected by the San Diego Padres after catcher Jeremy Rodriguez was drafted by San Diego in 2011.
Both Austin Davis and Taylor Aikenhead will be guests on 'Roadrunner Rundown' the official TV program of Bakersfield Roadrunner Athletics on Tuesday at 10 A.M. The show airs live on Bakersfield.com.
