Carter's Complete Game Leads 'Runners Past Fresno

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Junior Hayden Carter (San Diego, Calif., Vista HS) tossed his first career complete game as Bakersfield (21-27) defeated Fresno State (25-25) 6-3 Wednesday night at Hardt Field. The 5-11 righty got 15 ground ball outs as he needed 120 pitches (75 for strikes) to earn the victory.

Taylor Ward gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when his sac fly plated Trent Woodward. Soloman Williams (Jr., Long Beach, Calif., Golden West College) responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-RBI single for a 'Runner lead.

The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the fifth when Austin Guibor scored after CSUB catcher Ross Hough (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Central Arizona College) dropped Allen Gwynn's (R-Sr., Santa Paula, Calif., Ventura College) throw from left on a Woodward single.

Bakersfield went back into the lead in the fifth. With runners on first and second, Williams struck out, but Ward, the Fresno State catcher, attempted to pick off Chance Gusbeth (So., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) at first. Ward's throw was wild, ending up in the rightfield corner, allowing Max Carter (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) to score. Gusbeth scored later in the inning on Tim Borst's fifth wild pitch of the game.

Kevin Viers' ground out to second scored Ward to make it a one run game in the top of the sixth. With two outs and a runner on first in the bottom of the seventh, Fresno State intentionally walked Garrett Pierce (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) to get to Metzgar. David Metzgar (Fr., Lancaster, Calif., Paraclete HS) responded with his third hit of the night, a single deep in the hole at second, allowing Williams and Pierce to score for a 6-3 CSUB advantage.

With one out in the ninth, Carter walked Kevin Viers. Manny Argomaniz singled to center to bring up Guibor who struck out.  Pinch-hitter Jake Stone worked the count to 2-0 before Carter got two straight strikes and ended the game by striking out Stone looking.

Metzgar went 3-for-4 on the night. Mylz Jones (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) tallied two hits for the 'Runners. The Bulldogs would end the night with a total of six wild pitches. Woodward and Chris Mariscal both recorded two hits for Fresno State.

The Roadrunners host New Mexico State in the final home WAC series beginning Friday night at 6 p.m.
