Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--New Mexico State (19-27, 10-11 WAC) defeated Bakersfield (23-28, 14-10 WAC) 19-7 Sunday afternoon in the series finale between the two schools.
The Aggies jumped on top early, scoring 12 runs in the first three innings 12 of the first 17 New Mexico State batters reached base against CSUB starter Austin Davis (R-So., Scottsdale, Ariz., Desert Mountain HS) who took the loss.
The Roadrunners avoided the shutout when Soloman Williams' (Jr., Long Beach, Calif., Golden West College) sac fly plated Oscar Sanay (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) in the sixth.
Joey Sanchez (Fr., Pico Rivera, Calif., El Rancho HS) walked with the bases loaded in the seventh to get the RBI when Garrett Pierce (Jr., Bakersfield, Centennial HS). CSUB added a run on a NM State error before Cody White's (Fr., Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) single plated two more to give CSUB five runs. A wild pitch allowed the 'Runners sixth run to score. Mylz Jones' (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) sac fly drove in White capped off the six-run rally.
Kristoffer Koerper posted his fifth hit of the day, a home run to right to make it 15-7 in the eighth. The Aggies added four including a two-RBI double from Koerper in the ninth.
Using a wood bat, Koerper went 6-for-7 with seven RBI's. Six Aggies had at least two hits. Logan Trowbridge (Jr., Santa Cruz, Calif., College of San Mateo) and David Metzgar (Fr., Lancaster, Calif., Paraclete HS) both had two hits for Bakersfield. Jones extended his hitting streak to 15 with a single in the ninth.
The game was the final home contest for Bakersfield head coach Bill Kernen who announced his retirement Thursday. The Roadrunners travel to Fresno State Tuesday night for the final non-conference game of the season. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
