Box Score (NORMAN, Okla.)-The Bakersfield Roadrunners took advantage of early Oklahoma miscues plating two runs through the first five innings but a big seventh inning by the Sooners was enough to hold off CSUB in a 4-2 win Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead following an Allen Gwynn (R-Sr., Santa Paula, Calif., Ventura CC) ball that was hit to deep right field but dropped by Oklahoma's Hunter Haley. The two-base error set the table for Max Carter (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) who delivered the RBI single.
CSUB starting pitcher Taylor Aikenhead (Sr., Lancaster, Calif., Bakersfield College) kept the Sooners off balance through the first five innings, not allowing a runner in scoring position while striking out two and allowing just two hits.
Bakersfield would extend their lead after Jordie Hein (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) was hit by a pitch with two outs in the fifth inning, Mylz Jones (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) infield single moved him to second base before Chance Gusbeth (So., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) delivered a two-out RBI single through the left side to give CSUB a 2-0 lead.
Oklahoma cut into the lead with a leadoff double from Josh Ake in the sixth inning, marking the first time the Sooners were in scoring position up to that point. He would score after being sacrificed to third base and a groundball to shortstop by Dylan Neal to make it 2-1 CSUB.
Bakersfield would threaten in the top of the seventh following a pair of walks and a stolen base. But Gusbeth struck out and Hein was thrown out stealing third base to end the frame. Oklahoma would seize that momentum and carry it to the bottom of the seventh scoring three runs, sparked by a one-out single by Mac James, then a game-tying triple from Austin O'Brien.
Hunter Haley would break the 2-2 tie with an RBI double to right field before Ake scored Haley on an RBI single with two outs to give the Sooners the 4-2 lead.
The Roadrunners left seven on base in the ball game, while Oklahoma committed three errors, the first leading to CSUB's first run of the ballgame. Hein reached base three times to lead Bakersfield's offense which was limited to just four hits in the loss.
The Roadrunners and Sooners continue the series with a Saturday doubleheader at 2 P.M. (CST) due to expected inclement weather on Sunday.
