Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Allen Gwynn (R-Sr., Santa Paula, Calif., Ventura College) went 3-for-5 with three RBI's as Bakersfield (13-19, 6-5 WAC) rallied from an early deficit to defeat Chicago State (10-20, 0-8 WAC) 16-7 Saturday night.
The Cougars took an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Highlighting the rally was a two-RBI single from Mattingly Romanin. Garrett Pierce (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) broke the seal for the 'Runners in the bottom of the second with sacrifice fly that plated Gwynn. Andrew Lojewski (Jr., Woodland, Calif., American River College) cut the CSU lead to one with an RBI single which scored Max Carter (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS).
Oscar Sanay (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) tied the score with a safety squeeze that plated Logan Trowbridge (Jr., Santa Cruz, Calif., College of San Mateo HS). Sanay reached second and Lojewski moved to third on the play when ChicagoState pitcher Dane Mehring, threw the ball away trying to throw Sanay out. Jordie Hein (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) loaded the bases with an infield single to bring up Mylz Jones (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS). Jones reached on a throwing error by Romainin, the Cougars' third baseman as two runs scored on the play. Hein would come home on interference by Chicago State's shortstop, Julian Russell to make it 6-3. Gwynn would drive in Jones for the seventh CSUB run of the inning as the Roadrunners sent 11 to plate in the inning.
Chicago State responded in the top of the third by getting an RBI double from Robert Swenson with two outs. Bakersfield scored six more in the third including a two-RBI double from Gwynn and a two-RBI single from Chance Gusbeth (So., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS). The Cougars scored one in the top of the fourth.
After Bakersfield reliever Steven Gee (Fr., Taft, Calif., Taft Union HS) got the first out in the sixth, Chicago State got three straight hits and a walk loaded the bases for Sanford Hunt. Hunt struck out four out number two. Romanin posted an infield single to drive in a run. Swenson grounded out to third for the final out. Sanay responded with a two-out, two-RBI triple in the bottom of the frame for a 15-7 Bakersfield advantage. CSUB for the final time in the seventh on a Nick Rogowski (Jr., Woodbridge, Va., CypressCollege) RBI single (his first hit of the year in 15 at-bats).
Sanay was 2-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Trowbridge scored three runs for the 'Runners. Chicago State outhit Bakersfield 15-14. In addition to Mathesion, Cougars' leadoff hitter Jared Patterson and Romanin each drove in three runs. Gee retired the final 10 batters he faced to get the four-inning save, the first of his young career. Barragan improved to 3-4 on the year, tying his career high in strikeouts with seven.
The series concludes Sunday. Note, the game time was moved up one hour to 12 p.m. to accommodate Chicago State's travel.
