Box Score 2 OREM, Utah--Utah Valley (9-18, 2-4 WAC) swept a Western Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader against Bakersfield (11-15, 4-5 WAC) Saturday.
GAME 1
Utah Valley pitcher Ryan Miller retired the first 13 Bakersfield batters he faced as he led the Wolverines to a 4-1 victory in the opener. Allen Gwynn (R-Jr., Santa Paula, Calif., Ventura College) broke the perfect game up with a single through the left side with one out in the top of the fifth. Miller would go 7.2 innings, giving up a total of two hits before giving way to Devin Nelson in the eighth. Nelson got the final out of the eighth.
Mark Krueger tripled in Greyson Bogden in the bottom of the first to give Utah Valley an early advantage. The Wolverines took advantage of two bases loaded walks in the bottom of the seventh as UVU scored three times in the bottom of the seventh.
Jordie Hein (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) opened the ninth by working a walk out of UVU reliever Chad Michaud. Hein advanced to third when second baseman Greyson Bodgen's throw went wide of second on Mylz Jones' (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) grounder. Max Carter (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) posted a sacrifice fly to plate Hein as Jones moved up to second on the Wolverines' second error of the inning.
Chance Gusbeth (So., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) singled to left to push Jones to third, bringing up Gwynn who struck out. Oscar Sanay (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) fouled out to second base to end the game.
GAME 2
Utah Valley took the doubleheader by defeating Bakersfield 4-2 in the nightcap.The Roadrunners scored first when Gwynn came around on a UtahValley error in the top of the second. Garrett Pierce (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) added an RBI single later in the inning to plate Sanay.
The Wolverines loaded the bases with one out in the third and broke the seal when Kolby Croft's RBI single scored a run, but Bogden was thrown out by Gusbeth attempting to go from first to third. Austin Davis (R-So., Scottsdale, Ariz. (Desert Mountain HS), the 'Runner starter got Brinkerhoff to ground to third to end the inning.
UtahValley took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth. Bogden walked to open the inning. Seth Rhineer was hit by a Davis pitch to move Bogden into scoring position. The 'Runners failed to throw out Sean Moysh during his sacrifice bunt attempt to load the bases. Davis uncorked a wild pitch which allowed all of the runners to move up a base and tie the score.
UVU cleanup hitter Colby Croft, who was hitting .175 entering the at-bat, singled up the middle to score Rhineer for what proved to be the game-winning run. Carter relieved Davis, but he walked the bases loaded to bring up Riley White. White grounded into a 6-4-3 double play which allowed Moysh to score. The 'Runners later recorded the final out of the inning.
UVU starter Danny Beddes got the first out of the ninth before Gwynn walked on five pitches. Kyle Valgardson entered the game in relief to face Sanay. On Valgardson's first pitch, Sanay flew out to left. David Metzgar (Fr., Lancaster, Calif., Paraclete HS) fouled out to conclude the day.
The Wolverine pitchers combined on a three-hitter. Pierce had two of the three Bakersfield hits.
