Huxhold Named WAC Swimmer Of The Year

SAN ANTONIO, Texas--Mitchell Huxhold (Jr., Escondido, Calif., San Pasqual HS) broke a 27-year-old WAC record in the 1650 freestyle and was named WAC Swimmer of the Year as the Roadrunners wrapped up league competition Saturday night.

Huxhold automatically qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships in the 1650 free with a time of 14:47.18. He earned the AQ by one one-hundredth of a second. He defeated second place Andrew Faciszewski of Air Force by nearly 29 seconds and lowered his school mark down from 15:08.61 which he recorded in 2013.

The 2014 WAC Champion in the 500 free, Huxhold now holds the league record in the 500, 1000, and 1650 frees. In addition to his auto time for nationals in the 1650, Huxhold turned in a "B" cut time in the 500 free earlier in the meet.

As a team, Bakersfield placed sixth (335). UNLV (767) was the men's team champion.

"Getting an automatic invite to NCAAs is not easy for any school,  we are so psyched to be part of the elite teams heading to Texas in March," said Bakersfield director of swimming and diving Chris Hansen.

The NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships will be contested Mar. 27-29 in Austin, Texas.
