Towson Defeats Bakersfield 3-2

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—A Bakersfield error in the top of the ninth allowed the go-ahead run to score as Towson (4-2) defeated the Roadrunners (5-3) 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Hardt Field.

Chance Gusbeth (So., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) drove in Oscar Sanay (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) to give Bakersfield a 1-0 lead after one.

Brendan Butler doubled with two outs in the top of the second, but Sanay took the relay from leftfielder Nick Rogowski (Jr., Woodbridge, Va., Cypress College) and threw out Dominic Frantantuono at the plate. Rogowski drove in CSUB's second run in the bottom of the second when he safety squeezed Andrew Lojewski (Jr., Woodland, Calif., AmericanRiverCollege) home.

An RBI ground out from Brandon Gonnella broke the seal for Towson in the top of the fifth. The Tigers tied the score on a CSUB passed ball later in the fifth. Mylz Jones' (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) diving play in the top of the seventh ended a potential threat for Tigers.

The Roadrunners loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. Gonnella, who started the game in left and relieved starter Bruce Zimmerman  in the sixth, struck out Soloman Williams (Jr., Long Beach, Calif., GoldenWestCollege) and Garrett Pierce (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) to get out of the inning. Gonnella struck out Logan Trowbridge (Jr., Santa Cruz, Calif., College of San Mateo).

Hunter Bennett and Mike Draper recorded back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the ninth off of 'Runner reliever Max Carter (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS). CSUB closer Sergio Luna came on and struck out Tigers' leadoff hitter Zach Fisher for the second out. Luna hit Pat Fitzgerald to load the bases. Luna attempted to pick off Fitzgerald at first and the ball got away from Williams, allowing Bennett to score. Gonnella, the No. 3 hitter for Towson, grounded into a fielders choice to end the inning.

Gonnella retired the Roadrunners in the ninth to earn the victory. Gonnella and Zimmermann combined on a six-hitter with Gusbeth becoming the only 'Runners with more than one hit (2). Austin Davis (R-So., Scottsdale, Ariz., Desert Mountain HS) started for Bakersfield. The MLB prospect allowed four hits over the first seven innings before giving way to Carter. The trio of 'Runner pitchers scattered seven hits and got 15 ground ball outs. Bakersfield had its 10-game home winning (dating back to last season) snapped by the Tigers.

Bakersfield travels to FresnoState Wednesday night for 6:35 p.m. start.
