Bakersfield Comes From Behind To Defeat Towson

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.— Garrett Pierce (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) singled in Logan Trowbridge (Jr., Santa Cruz, Calif., College of San Mateo) with one out in the bottom of the ninth to give Bakersfield (4-2) a 5-4 come from behind victory over Towson (3-1) Friday night at Hardt Field.

A Pierce RBI single in the first gave the 'Runners an early advantage. RBI's from Peter Bowles, Zach Fisher, and Pat Fitzgerald gave the Tigers the lead in the second. Jordie Hein's (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) double plated Nick Vehlewald (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Garces HS) in the bottom of the third for the second CSUB run.

Fisher drove in his second run with a single in the top of the seventh. The rally would have been larger had not CSUB shortstop Oscar Sanay (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) turned in the hidden ball trick to get the middle out of the inning.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh Sanay and David Metzgar (Fr., Lancaster, Calif., Paraclete HS) were walked by Towson's second pitcher of the game, Lee Lawler. Trowbridge lined out to right to end the inning. The Roadrunners put the go-ahead run at the plate with one out in the eighth. Greg Baruka, the fourth Tiger pitcher of the day, came on to strikeout Vehlewald. Baruka got Cody White (Fr., Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) to fly out to right for the final out.

Hein led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to center. Sanay brought Hein with a double to left center. Metzgar's sacrifice bunt moved Sanay to third for Trowbridge who remained in the game as the CSUB catcher. Trowbridge doubled to left to tie the game. Soloman Williams (Jr., Long Beach, Calif., GoldenWestCollege) singled to left center, Trowbridge had to hold up and could only advance to third. Pierce fouled the first pitch off before connecting on the gamewinning hit.

Pierce and Hein each posted two hits for CSUB. Bowles led Towson by going for 3-for-4.

The series continues Saturday with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
