Bakersfield Sweeps Milwaukee

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Bakersfield completed a season-opening three game sweep of Milwaukee as the Roadrunners defeated the Panthers 9-3 Sunday. The game was ended after eight innings due the Panthers' travel back to Milwaukee.

Sam Koenig's RBI triple combined with Koening scoring on an Austin Davis (R-So., Scottsdale, Ariz., Desert Mountain HS) wild pitch gave the Panthers a 2-0 in the top of the first.

Garrett Pierce (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second to get the 'Runners on the board. The Roadrunners tied the score on an Oscar Sanay (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) single that plated Chance Gusbeth (So., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) but the go-ahead run in Mahlik Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) was thrown out at the plate by leftfielder Ryan Solberg.

Koenig took advantage of a fastball that Davis left up in the zone to drive in Luke Meeteer with single and a 3-2 Milwaukee lead in the top of the third. Bakersfield tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a Panther error and took a 4-3 lead on a Sanay sacrifice fly. A Ross Hough (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Central Arizona College) sac fly in the bottom of the sixth increased the CSUB advantage to two.

Davis struck out a career high eight in six innings before giving way to Sergio Luna (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif., East L.A. College). With one out in the top of the eighth, Milwaukee posted back-to-back hits resulting in Luna being pulled in favor of Max Carter (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS). A Carter wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, but Carter got Tyler Hermann to pop out to first for the second out. Pat Wilson ground a nibbler back to Carter and he tossed it to first for the final out.

A Gusbeth two-RBI single in the bottom of the eighth highlighted a four-run outburst for the 'Runners. Gusbeth ended the day with three hits (3-for-5). Sanay and Soloman Williams (Jr., Long Beach, Calif., Golden West College) both posted two hits. Sanay drove in two runs. Hough ended the day with two RBI's after coming in as a defensive replacement in the seventh.

The Roadrunners head to the road for the first time Tuesday when Bakersfield plays at UC Santa Barbara. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

NOTES-20 Major League Baseball scouts were in attendance to see Davis in his first start since his true freshman year in 2012…Davis was ranked 83rd in Baseball America's Top 100 Prospects in the preseason.
