BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- Coming off of impressive performances, two representatives of the Roadrunner swimming and diving teams have been honored by the Western Athletic Conference. Tuesday afternoon, the WAC announced that swimmer Mitchell Huxhold and diver Carlee Burks were named WAC Male Swimmer and Female Diver of the Week, respectively.
Huxhold (Sr., Escondido, Calif., San Pasqual HS) took the pool by storm at the A3 Performance Invitational which included a large pool of swimmers containing representatives of some of California's best and a ranked team. The reigning WAC Male Athlete of the Year won all three individual events in which he swam, led two relay teams to top-six finishes, and was eventually named Swimmer of the Meet.
Huxhold made NCAA B cuts in the 200 (1:37.85), 500 (4:19.23), and 1650 (15:10.89) free this week and is ranked second in the WAC in the 200 and first in the 500, 1000 (9:08.12 split in 1650), and 1650 freestyle. This is the first time Huxhold has earned WAC Swimmer of the Week honors.
Burks (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) finished second in the 1m board with a score of 265.90. She then went on to win the 3m board in dominating fashion (291.35). Both scores were career highs for the sophomore from Bakersfield and both qualified her for the Zone E meet (a feat which no Roadrunner accomplished in 2013-14). Burks also cracked the CSUB all-time Top 5 in both events, ranking third in the 3m and fifth in the 1m.
This is the third time a Roadrunner diver has earned WAC Diver of the Week honors this season and it is the second time this year for Burks.
Some of the Roadrunners will return to action after the Thanksgiving break when they take on the US Nationals, Dec. 4-7, in Greensboro, N.C. The rest of the squad will return to the Hillman Aquatics Complex on campus, Saturday, Dec. 13, to host Cal Baptist in a dual.
