Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Playing in front of the largest regular season crowd in school history, Bakersfield (7-2-1) defeated San José State (2-7) 5-1 in the Western Athletic Conference men's soccer opener for both teams Saturday night.
The crowd of 2,014 saw the teams play a 1-1 first half after CSUB's Joe Masumiya (R-Sr., Lakewood, Calif., Lakewood HS) and Uriel Ayala scored for their teams. Mario Iniguez (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Taft College) put the Roadrunners up for good with a blast from 30 yards out in the 51st minute.
Julian Zamora (R-Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Golden Valley HS) extended the 'Runner advantage when he scored the next two CSUB goals in a 10-minute span midway through the closing stanza. David Velasquez (R-Sr., Los Angles, Calif., Locke HS) and Masumiya picked up the assists along the way. Alex Flores (Sr., Sylmar, Calif., Birmingham Community HS) capped off the scoring when he headed in Christian Duarte's (Jr., Houston, Texas, Clear Springs HS) corner kick at the 76:59 mark.
Bakersfield's attendance was the second most in school history, trailing the 2,207 who saw the Roadrunners play Saint Mary's in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament. The match marked the return of former CSUB coach Simon to Bakersfield. Tobin led the 'Runners for 27 years before taking the Spartans' head coaching position last Winter.
The Roadrunners travel to Missouri-Kansas City Friday for a 7 p.m. (CDT) start.
