SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—No. 27 Cal Poly (34-16) defeated Bakersfield (34-19) 10-4 in the final non-conference game of the 2013 season for the Roadrunners.
Cael Brockmeyer's (Jr., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) sac fly plated Oscar Sanay (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) for his team leading 48th RBI in the top of the first gave CSUB an early advantage. RBI's from Brian Mundell, Nick Torres, and David Armendriz in the bottom of the first gave the Mustangs the lead.
Frank Martinez (Sr., Riverside, Calif., East LA College) tied the score in the top of the fourth when his single scored Brockmeyer and Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS). Elliot Stewart returned the lead to Cal Poly when he hit his sixth home run, a two-run blast, in the bottom of the fourth. Three more would come around in the fourth to make it 8-3.
Tyler Shryock (Jr.,. Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) picked up an RBI with a single that scored Jordie Hein (So., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) in the top of the seventh before Cal Poly scored twice in the bottom of the frame.
Sanay, Shryock, Kevin Younger (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) and Chance Gusbeth (Fr., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) each tallied two hits. Denver Chavez, Armendariz, Mundell, and Nick Torres each posted two hits for the Mustangs. Torres drove in three runs. Bakersfield would outhit the Mustangs 12-9.
The Roadrunners conclude the regular season this weekend at San Jose State. Game one of the series gets underway Friday night at 6 p.m.
