SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Sacramento State (13-9, 1-1 WAC) evened up this weekend's WAC baseball series with CSU Bakersfield (16-7, 1-1 WAC) as the Hornets defeated the Roadrunners 5-0 Saturday afternoon.
RBI doubles from Rhys Hoskins and Chris Lewis gave SacramentoState a 2-0 lead after one. The Hornets turned double plays in the first and second to end CSUB threats. The Roadrunners put the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs in the fourth, but Oscar Sanay (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) flew out to right to conclude the inning
Garrett Pierce (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) threw out a SacState runner at the play to complete a double play and turn away a Hornets' scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth. A pair of singles from Kevin Younger (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) and Tyler Shryock (Jr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) with one out in the sixth brought up Cael Brockmeyer (Jr., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) who grounded into a double play to end the frame.
The Hornets added three unearned runs in the sixth (2) and the seventh. Dylan Christensen (Sr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., SaddlebackCollege) and Younger reached first and second with no outs to begin the eighth. The third SacState pitcher of the game, Brandon Creel, entered the game and got Shyrock to ground into a 3-6 fielder's choice for the first out. With runners on the corners, Brockmeyer struck out. Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) struck out to end the inning.
Jones extended his hitting streak to 14 with a single in the top of the fourth. Sanay and Shyrock both posted two hits. The Hornets ended the Roadrunners' six-game winning streak with their victory Saturday.
The series concludes Sunday at 12 p.m.
