DENVER, Colo.--Bakersfield's Hedda Regefalk was selected 2013 Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year by the league's nine women's soccer coaches.
Regefalk, a native of Stockholm, Sweden (Balckebergs Gymnasium), led the Roadrunners in conference play with three goals and seven points. She had 20 shots during the 12 league matches. Overall, Regefalk was second on the team in points (10) and tied for second on the squad in assists (2) with two other players. Regefalk was also selected second team All-Conference.
"It is impressive for Hedda to be named freshman of the year amongst such a strong freshman class in the conference," said Bakersfield head coach Melissa Phillips. "She is incredibly dangerous when she gets in behind the defense because of her superb technical ability and pace. I believe her true potential is still to be seen."
Regefalk tied for the team lead in goals (4) with first team All-Conference selection, Erica Shelton (Bakersfield, Calif., UC Santa Barbara). Shelton, also led the 'Runners in assists (5) and shots (39). She had four of her assists during WAC matches.
"Erica is a true attacking center midfielder," Phillips said. "A player of her quality in that position is hard to come by. She has a great technical ability, vision for the game and can facilitate for 90 minutes."
Junior Sarah Cook (Las Vegas, Nev., Las Vegas HS) was named second team All-Conference. A defender, Cook, started all 19 matches, playing all but 26 of the 1,373 minutes this season in the 'Runners played this season. She took five shots.
"Sarah played most of the conference seasons as a midfielder, but her selection as a second team defender is a testament to her versatility," said Phillips. "She is a true stakeholder for our team defensively."
"I am excited to see these student athletes recognized by the rest of the conference coaches for their efforts and abilities," Phillips continued. "These players truly performed throughout the conference season and it is a very positive sign for the future of this program."
