PALO ALTO, Calif.--The Bakersfield wrestling team was swept at the Stanford Duals Saturday.
The Roadrunners opened the day by dropping a 19-14 decision to No. 18 Stanford in a Pac-12 dual. Bakersfield dropped the first three matches of the meet before Ian Nickell (R-So., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) earned a 6-0 victory over Peter Russo at 141 ounds. Dalton Kelley (R-Sr., 149, Alamosa, Colo., Alamosa HS) and Spencer Hill (R-Jr., 157, Clovis, Calif., Fresno City College) posted back to back wins (which included a Hill major decision) to tie the match at 10.
#15 Jim Wilson defeated David Meza (R-So., Fullerton, Calif., Buena Park HS) put the Cardinal back into the lead 13-10. Bryce Hammond (R-So., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) earned a major decision over Kyle Meyer (11-2) to give Bakersfield the for the only time in the dual, 14-13. Thomas Kimbrell edged Sean Pollock (R-Jr., Oceanside, Calif., Rancho Buena Vista HS) 4-3 in the 184-pound bout to set the stage for the 197-pounders in the final match. Dan Scherer defeated Reuben Franklin (Jr., Murrieta, Calif., Vista Murrieta HS) 9-3 for the Stanford victory.
Utah Valley defeated Bakersfield 19-16 in the middle session. Jose Mendoza (R-Sr., 133, Selma, Calif., Selma HS), Hill (157), Hammond (174), and Franklin (197) charted victories for the Roadrunners.
No. 10 Nebraska shutout the 'Runners 42-0 in the final session. The loss marked the first time since Dec. 17, 1982 when Iowa defeated Bakersfield 44-0 that the Roadrunners were shutout in a dual.
