Box Score USAFA, Colo.— Hugo Vinales (Fr., Palm Springs, Calif., Palm Springs HS) scored with 1:33 remaining in the second overtime to give Bakersfield (9-8-2) a 1-0 victory over Kansas City (4-11-4) in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Thursday.
The Roadrunners outshot the Kangaroos 29-11 over the first 90 minutes. Bakersfield had three attempts go off the UMKC post or crossbar. Christian Duarte (So., Houston, Texas, Clear Springs) took a shot with 46 seconds remaining in regulation, but 'Roos goalie Chris McGaughey made the save that sent the match into overtime.
The Roadrunners had two chances in the first overtime to end it. The first came with just over four to play when Jonathan Colunga (Fr., Lindsay, Calif., Lindsay HS) sent Eduardo Calzada (So., S. Los Angeles, Calif., Roosevelt HS) a pass just inside the 18, but Calzada's attempt went wide right. The second saw Colunga dribble in and his first shot was saved by McGaughey, the rebound came out, but Colunga couldn't put it away. CSUB increased their shots advantage to 32-13 after the first overtime.
UMKC had taken the lone shot of the second overtime up until Vinales' gamewinner. Mario Ortiz (Fr., Los Angeles, Calif., Leuzinger) set Vinales up for the gamewinning goal with his pass. Vinales went under McGaughey to the lower right and connected from 10 yards out. For the match, Bakersfield outshot the 'Roos 33-15.
CSUB goalie Anthony Perez (R-So., Fontana, Calif., Bloomington HS) charted eight saves as he recorded his fourth shutout of the year. McGaughey kept UMKC in the match, making 11 saves.
The Roadrunners will play either San Jose State in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament Friday beginning at 5 p.m. (PST). The Spartans tied UNLV in their first round match 2-2, but advanced on PK's 9-8.
