BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Andrew Letourneau's (Sr., Bakersfield,
Calif., Bakersfield
College) RBI single in the bottom of
the ninth gave CSU Bakersfield (25-29) a 3-2 victory over Utah (14-42) Sunday afternoon.
Utah
scored two runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead. Cael Brockmeyer
(So., Vineyard Haven, Mass.,
Avon Old Farms HS) got one back for the Roadrunners with an RBI single in the
bottom of the frame.
The Roadrunners put the tying in run in scoring position in
the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Utah
starting pitcher Mitch Watrous worked out of trouble in the fourth and fifth,
but in the sixth he was relieved by Kelsey Kondo with one out. Kondo gave up
the tying run on a Tyler Shryock (So., Tehachapi,
Calif., Desert Christian HS) RBI
single.
Jordie Hein's (Fr., Scottsdale,
Ariz., Chapparal HS) school
record 35th walk of the season loaded the bases with two outs. Hein broke the
previous mark of 34, set by Jeremy Rodriguez during the 2010 season. The third Utes' pitcher of the inning, Tyler
Wagner struck out Letourneau
to end the inning.
The Utes tried for the safety squeeze with runners on the
corners in the seventh but Tyler Reif
fouled out to Brockmeyer, CSUB's catcher. Parker Morin grounded out to second
to end the threat.
With two outs in the ninth, James Brooks singled and moved
to second on a Tyler Relf walk. Jeff McKenzie (Jr., El
Dorado Hills, Calif., San Joaquin Delta
College) got Parker Morin, Utah's leading hitter to
fly out to end the inning.
Dylan Christensen (Jr, Rancho Santa
Margarita, Calif., Saddleback College) tripled to open the bottom of
the ninth to bring up Hein who walked, setting the stage for Letourneau's
walk-off hit. Brockmeyer and Shryock each posted two hits for CSUB. McKenzie tossed his fifth complete game for
CSUB, striking out nine.
