BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Stuart Smith (R-Jr., Ventura,
Calif., Buena HS) went 2-for3 with three RBI's
as CSU Bakersfield (24-29) defeated Utah
(14-41) 7-5 Saturday night.
Taking advantage of two batters hit by pitches, and a walk, the
Roadrunners scored four runs in the bottom of the first to strike first. Cael Brockmeyer
(So., Vineyard Haven, Mass.,
Avon Old Farms HS) had the lone hit of the inning, a double, which gave him two
RBI's.
CSUB scored a run in the fifth for a five-run advantage. With
two outs in the top of the seventh, four consecutive Utes' hits led to three
runs. Smith's RBI of the night made it 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh. DC
Legg's (R-Sr., Murrieta, Calif.,
Cypress College) sac fly gave CSUB a four-run
advantage later in the inning.
Utah
climbed to within 7-5 with two outs in the ninth. With runners on second and third, Connor
Eppert, who had three hits earlier in the night off of CSUB starter Scott Brattvet (Jr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.,
Santa Ana College) grounded out to second to end the game.
Brattvet struck out eight while walking only two as he
posted his third complete game of the year. Jordie Hein (Fr., Scottsdale, Ariz.,
Chapparal HS) tied the CSUB school record for most walks in a season with his 34th
in the second inning. Jeremy Rodriguez walked 34 times during the 2010 season.
Eppert's three hits against CSUB went along with the three
hits Eppert posted in Saturday afternoon's 6-2 loss to UC Santa Barbara. The
Utes outhit the Roadrunners 10-6.
CSUB concludes the 2012 season Sunday when the Roadrunners
take on Utah
at 12 p.m. and play UC Santa Barbara at 3:30 p.m. CSUB will honor the 2012
seniors prior to the UC Santa Barbara contest.
