BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - After sweeping Friday's doubleheader against defending Pacific Coast Softball Conference runner-up Loyola Marymount, the CSU Bakersfield softball team lost both games of Saturday's doubleheader against the Lions and ended up settling for a 2-2 split for the season series with LMU.
CSUB lost Game 1, 9-4, and then fell in Game 2, 5-0.
In Game 1, CSUB sophomore third baseman Amy Ricciardi (Chino Hills, Calif., Ayala HS) hit a solo home run, her third dinger of the series, to give her four homers on the season. Ricciardi also hit a sacrifice fly.
The Roadrunners (10-28) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings, but then the Lions came to life with a seven-run fourth inning that featured three home runs, including a grand slam from shortstop Sam Fischer. The homers put the Lions (26-15) up 7-3 and they never gave up the lead.
Sophomore 'Runner shortstop Myshayla Fryer (San Diego, Calif., University HS) went 2-for-4 from the plate with an RBI, sophomore left fielder Karissa Veiga (Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) went 2-for-3 with one run scored, redshirt junior center fielder Laura King (Camarillo, Calif., UNLV) added a run and a hit and senior first baseman Sara Smith (Northridge, Calif., Biola Univ.) added a run scored and an RBI.
In Game 2, LMU pitcher Dana Waldusky shut down the 'Runners, hurling a complete-game, one-hitter with one strikeout and no walks. Smith got the only hit for CSUB, a single in the second inning. Loyola Marymount's Meghan Herman put the Lions up 2-0 in the second inning with a home run. Fischer added her third homer of the series, which is also her 18th on the season, and Kelly Sarginson also hit a home run to account for the Lions' five runs.
Through two weeks of PCSC play, the 'Runners have a 3-5 PCSC record while the Lions are at 4-4.
CSUB will now take a break from PCSC play and travel to UC Santa Barbara (16-25) for a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
