BAKERSFIELD,
Calif.—USC (20-14) scored six
runs with outs as the Trojans defeated CSU Bakersfield (17-18) 11-2 in front of a CSUB school record crowd of
1,063 Tuesday night at Hardt Field. The previous Roadrunner attendance record
was 1,049 set during the 2010 season opener against Air Force.
James Roberts' two-RBI single with two outs in the top of
the first gave the Trojans an early lead. Again with two outs in the second, USC
capitalized on two CSUB errors to score three runs. Garret Houts' first career
home run in the top of the fourth with two outs increased the advantage to 6-0.
Tyler Shryock (So., Tehachapi,
Calif., Desert Christian HS) got
the Runners on the board with an RBI single in the fourth. CSUB threatened
later in the fourth, but with the bases loaded and outs, Oscar Sanay (So., Chula Vista, Calif.,
Bonita Vista HS) grounded out to end the frame.
USC again took advantage of Roadrunner errors in the fifth,
scoring two runs on two CSUB mistakes. The Trojans would score two in the sixth
and one in the seventh. Frank Martinez's (Jr., Riverside,
Calif., East L.A. College) RBI ground out in the seventh
made it 11-2.
CSUB had their chances, stranding runners in scoring
position in each of the first four innings. The Roadrunners left 11 on base. Matt
Foat paced the Trjoans as he went 4-for-4 with three RBI's. Adam Landecker had
three hits (3-for-5) and two runs scored. Four Trojans' pitchers limited the
Roadrunners to five hits. Cael Brockmeyer (So., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS)
was 2-of-5.
The Roadrunners start an 11-game road trip at Fresno State
Saturday in a makeup of an earlier date lost to weather. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
