BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Despite totaling 19 hits on the day, the CSU Bakersifleld softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Saint Mary's, 10-5 and 12-5, on Saturday in Pacific Coast Softball Confernence action at Roadrunners Softball Complex.
In Game 1, Saint Mary's (17-20, 6-3 PCSC) held a 5-3 lead after seven innings, but then put the game away with a five-run seventh inning to win 10-5. After falling down 5-0 after one inning in Game 2, CSUB (10-32, 3-7 PCSC) rallied back to cut the Gaels' lead to 8-5 after six innings, but once again, Coastal Division rival Saint Mary's had a big seventh inning with four runs to seal the 12-5 win.
Freshman Adrianna Cardoza (Santa Anna, Calif., La Quinta HS) led the CSUB offense by going 5-for-6 from the plate with three RBIs and one run scored. Cardoza, the 'Runners' starting second baseman, also stepped up to pitch at the end of Game 1 for CSUB after pitcher/desingated player Taylor DeSilva (Sunnyvale, Calif., Univ. of the Pacific) was hit by a pitch on her throwing arm earlier in the game and was unable to throw.
Sophomore shortstop Myshayla Fryer (San Diego, Calif., University HS) went 4-for-6 on the day with two RBIs and two runs scored. Fryer hit a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh in Game 1 to try and lead a CSUB comeback atttempt, but the bid came up shy. Sophomore third baseman Amy Ricciardi (Chino Hills, Calif., Ayala HS) collected three hits on the day to go with two runs scored and one RBI while redshirt junior center fielder Laura King (Camarillo, Calif., UNLV) hit a solo home run, her second of the season, in Game 2.
The 'Runner players and coaches, serving as the field crew before the game, were able to dry out the field and make it playable after intense rains fell on Friday and another round of parcipitation came down on Saturday morning. The weather caused a one-hour delay to the start of the doubleheader. A little bit of rain fell in the first game, but otherwise the conditions were dry. A clearer, warmer day is in the forecast for Sunday.
Sunday will also be senior day for CSUB as it will honor its three seniors in Tera Macias (Los Banos, Calif., San Jose CC), Ashley Nahale (Fremont, Calif., Ohlone College) and Sara Smith (Northridge, Calif., Biola Univ.). The first game of the doubleheader will begin at noon.
