FRESNO, Calif.--Fresno State defeated CSU Bakersfield 2-1 in baseball action Friday night at Pete Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs (9-9) used a pair of sacrifice flies to score two runs in the fifth to take the lead. The second sac fly came after a Roadrunner error allowed the runner to advance to third. A DC Legg (R-Sr., Murietta, Calif., Cypress College) double in the sixth scored Cael Brockmeyer (So., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) get the Roadrunners on the board.
CSUB (7-10) loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Legg struck out to end the threat. The 'Runners threatened for the last time in the ninth. With one out, Jordie Hein (Fr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) walked for the third time on the night. Pinch hitter J.P. Maestas (R-Jr., Nipomo, Calif. (Allan Hancock College) went down looking against Fresno reliever Taylor Garrison. Oscar Sanay (So., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) struck out looking to end the game.
The Roadrunners were limited to five hits by Tyler Linehan and Garrison. CSUB could not take advantage of the opportunities that were presented to them as the Roadrunners left 11 runners on base.
Jeff McKenzie (Jr.
El Dorado Hills, Calif., San Joaquin Delta College) was the tough luck loser for the Roadrunners. McKenzie allowed only earned run in 6.1 innings. The lefty struck out three and did not walk a batter while allowing only six hits. Spenser Messmore (Sr., Granada Hills, Calif., Alemany HS) pitched the final inning and two-thirds for CSUB, giving up one hit and striking out one. Sanay had two hits.
