SAN DIEGO, Calif. - On the opening day of the San Diego Classic II, the
CSU Bakersfield softball team lost to Quinnipiac 3-1 and then fell to
Valparaiso 10-2 at San Diego University on Friday.
The game against Quinnipiac featured a close, back-and-forth battle. After
CSUB (6-17) went down 1-0 after two innings, senior first baseman Sara Smith
(Northridge, Calif., Biola Univ.) connected for a double to left center to
score freshman second baseman Adrianna Cardoza (Santa Anna, Calif., La Quinta HS),
who reached base on a single.
The Bobcats (11-5) added one run in both the fourth and sixth innings to go
up 3-1. The 'Runners threatened in the bottom of the seventh, getting two
runners on after right fielder Bree Sandoval (Fr., La Verne, Calif., Bonita HS)
walked and redshirt junior Laura King (Camarillo, Calif., UNLV) singled, but
CSUB's rally came up dry.
Smith went 2-for-2 in the game and sophomore left fielder Karissa Veiga
(Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) went 2-for-4 in the game.
Against the Crusaders, Catcher Jordan Rutkowski started things off with a
bang by hitting a three-run homer in the first inning to put Valparaiso (12-8)
up 3-1. CSUB sophomore shortstop Myshayla Fryer (San Diego, Calif., University
HS) hit an RBI single to left center to score Smith. In the second, redshirt
junior designated player Emily Bliss (Northridge, Calif., Chaminade Prep)
walked and came around to score, but that was the final run for the
'Runners.
The Crusaders put it away with a five-run sixth inning where they strung
together a walk and five hits to end the game. Sandoval went 2-for-3 in the
game and Veiga added a walk and a run.
CSUB will be back in action for the
second day of the San Diego Classic II on Saturday with a 9 a.m. showdown
against Harvard at San Diego State University. The 'Runners lost to Harvard 2-0
on March 10. CSUB will then head back to USD to take on Purdue at 2 p.m.
