EDINBURG, Texas -A four minute stretch in the second half
sparked by four turnovers and poor shooting saw a seven-point CSUB lead turn
into a double-digit deficit as the Roadrunners couldn't recover and fell 73-67
Wednesday night to Texas Pan-American.
CSUB led 47-40 with 10:46 remaining, but then went four
minutes without a field goal, turning the ball over four times in the process which
led to a 19-2 Pan-American run putting the Broncs up for good, as they dropped
CSUB to 12-13 on the season while improving to 9-17 on the year.
"It's a disappointing loss, I thought we handed it to them
instead of them (UTPA) making it their deal because of the way we handled the
ball," said CSUB head coach Rod Barnes. "This is a solid team and they play
well here but it's disappointing because we thought this was one we could get
our first out of state win at."
The Roadrunners led for most of the first half but could
never stretch their lead to more than seven points, keeping the door open for
the Broncs who used the 18 'Runner turnovers and hot second-half shooting to
earn the season split with CSUB.
Stephon Carter (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Garces HS) led the
way for CSUB with 19 points on 8 of 10 shooting as he moved into 9th
place on CSUB's all-time scoring list with 1,069 points. Zachary Lamb (Jr.,
Norcross, Ga., Miami-Dade CC) added 16 points on 7 of 15 from the field. The
Roadrunners again struggled from three-point range managing just 5 of 18 from
beyond the arc with three of those shots coming in the final minute when the
game was out of reach.
Rashad Savage grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds for the 'Runners
who also got 12 points from Donald Johnson (Sr., Lancaster Calif., Eastern
Arizona CC) off the bench. Aaron Urbanus led four Broncs in double digits with
21 points on 4 of 9 shooting and 9 of 10 from the free throw line. All four of
his field goals were from three-point range with the Broncs converting 9 of 21
attempts in the game and 5 of 8 in the second half.
CSUB remains winless outside of California this season and
will try to reverse their fortunes Sunday afternoon at Nebraska-Omaha. Tip off
is scheduled for 12 P.M. Pacific.
