Davis Rallies With 5 In The 9th To Defeat CSUB 6-5

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—UC Davis scored five runs in the top of ninth to rally for a 6-5 victory over CSU Bakersfield Saturday afternoon at Hardt Field.

The Runners got RBI's from Cael Brockmeyer (So., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) in the first, Kevin Younger (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) in the third, and Younger in the fifth to take a 3-1 into the ninth. David Popkins started the rally with one out with his ninth hit of the series, a double.

Popkins scored on a Paul Politi single. With runners on the corners, CSUB closer Spenser Messmore (Sr., Granada Hills, Calif., Alemany HS) who was on in relief of starter Scott Brattvet (Jr., Trabuco Canyon, Calif., Santa Ana College), got Nick Lynch to ground into a 5-2-5 fielder's choice for the second out. John Williams tied the score with an RBI single. Aggies' catcher Scott Kalush put UC Davis into the lead with a single that plated pinch runner Nick Lynch. Williams came around to score on the play on a CSUB error. Davis added what proved to be a valuable insurance run on a second Roadrunners' error of the inning.

CSU Bakersfield scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth. With one out and runners on first and third, Oscar Sanay (So., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) hit a grounder to Aggies' shortstop Adam Young.  Young forced Younger out at second, but his throw to first sailed high, allowing JP Maestas (Jr., Nipomo, Calif., Allan Hancock College) and Jordie Hein (Fr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chaparral HS) to score.  Spencer Koopmans got Brockmeyer to fly out to left center to end the game.

Popkins, who went 6-for-8 in the 16-inning Davis victory Friday night followed it up with a 3-for-4 performance Saturday. He was the only Aggies player to record multiple hits. Younger led the Roadrunners by going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Hein tallied his first multiple hit game with two knocks.

The teams return to the field Sunday at 1 p.m.
