BAKERSFIELD, Calif—Chuck Buchanan (R-Jr., Las
Vegas, Nev., Allan
Hancock College),
Korie Walkley (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS), and Spenser Messmore (Sr., Granada
Hills, Calif., Alemany HS) combined on a five-hitter as CSU Bakersfield (3-1)
defeated Fresno State (3-2) 4-0 Wednesday night at Hardt Field.
Buchanan struck out eight as he went the first six innings,
pitching out of trouble in the first and second innings. Walkley relieved the
6-5 left to begin the seven and got one out before the Bulldogs placed runners
on first and third. Messmore came in and saw his catcher Cael Brockmeyer (So., Vineyard
Haven, Mass.,
Avon Old Farms HS) throw out Daniel Moutrie attempting to steal second for out
No. 2. Messmore walked Patrick Hutchinson to load the bases but he struck out
Jordan Luplow to end the inning. Fresno State
left 11 runners on in the game including two in the top of the ninth before
Messmore ended the game by getting Luplow to ground out to third.
Oscar Sanay (So., Chula
Vista, Calif., Bonita
Vista HS) went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead a balanced eight-hit CSUB attack.
Brockmeyer and DC Legg (R-Sr., Murrietta, Calif., Cypress
College) also drove in
runs.
"It is always important to score first or in the ninth inning to extend the lead," said CSUB head coach Bill Kernen. "You very rarely see a guy (like Buchanan) struggle like that and the really get it turned around the way he did. We feel really good about what he did. Messmore is very resilent and he has the most experience and we will rely on him all year."
