No. 1 UC San Diego Defeats CSU Bakersfield 165-97

LOS ANGELES, Calif.-UC San Diego defeated CSU Bakersfield 165-97 in a men's swimming dual at Loyola Marymount Saturday afternoon. The Tritons are ranked No. 1 in the current College Swimming Coaches Association of America Division II poll.

Mitchell Huxhold (Fr., Escondido, Calif., San Pasqual HS) won the both the 500 freestyle and the 1000 freestyle. Huxhold turned in a mark of 4:38.18 in the 500 while he posted a time of 9:27.21.

Chris Pipes (Sr., Fresno, Calif., Merced College) won the 100 freestyle by posting a time of :45.69. Pipes was second in the 200 freestyle (1:44.35).

The 400 freestyle relay of Pipes, Alex Daneke (Jr., Lodi, Calif., UC Davis), Peter Bardessono (Sr., Elverta, Calif., American River College), and Mitch Wurm (Jr., Mesa, Ariz., Dobson HS) won the event in a time of 3:07.44.

“I knew today was going to be a challenge,” said CSUB director of swimming Chris Hansen. “We are without Jake Priest who is out with an injury, Jonathan Hall stayed at home with the flu and Troy Neklason is out with a back injury. Not to make excuses but those are three big players. However, Mitch Huxhold and Chris Pipes swam some big times today! These two are going to be something to watch at the MPSF! Dennis Cassidy and Gabriel Bertrand also had great meets. We are not happy to lose, but UCSD is a great team. It's time for us to focus on the MPSF.”

CSUB returns to the pool Jan. 28 when the Roadrunners host Cal Baptist in a 1 p.m. dual.
