OXFORD, Mss- CSU Bakersfield head men's basketball coach Rod Barnes is one of five members being inducted into this year's M-Club Athletics Hall of Fame at his alma mater Ole Miss this weekend.
Barnes had a storied career as both a student-athlete and a coach with the Rebels. As a player from 1985-1988, Barnes was a four-year letterwinner for Ole Miss playing for head coaches Lee hunt and Ed Murphy. He was one of just two players in school history to score more than 1,000 points and have more than 400 assists while becoming the first Ole Miss player ever to score 500 points, grab 100 rebounds and dish out 100 assists in a single season.
As a senior in 1988, Barnes was named All-SEC while also being named All-American honorable mention by The Sporting News. He was honored for his on-court accolades as a player recently as well, being named to the All-Century Team at Ole Miss.
Barnes returned to Ole Miss in 1993 as an assistant coach before being named head coach in 1998. In eight seasons he guided the Rebels to three NCAA Tournament appearances including a run into the Sweet 16 for the first and only time in the history of the University in 2001. Barnes as also named Naismith Coach of the Year in the same season.
Barnes remains the only person in the long history of the SEC to be named All-SEC as a player (1988) and SEC Coach of the Year (2001).
