BAKERSFIELD,
Calif.---Loyola Marymount (22-20)
defeated CSU Bakersfield (26-17) 5-2 May 7 at Hardt Field.
Lions' pitcher Jason Wheeler tossed a complete game six-hitter. The 6-6
lefty retired the first 14 CSUB batters he faced before DC Legg (Jr., Murrietta, Calif., Cypress College) singled to left with two outs
in the bottom of the fifth. Included in that was a spectacular grab by Loyola
Marymount third baseman Alex Guthrie who snared an Oscar Sanay (Fr., Chula Vista, Calif.,
Bonita Vista HS) line drive in the fifth. He would strike out seven and not walk a batter.
Taking advantage of a CSUB error, Loyola Marymount mounted a
rally which would result in four unearned runs in the top of the fourth. The
Lions plated an addition run in the fifth.
Cael Brockmeyer (Fr. Vineyard Haven, Mass, Avon Old Farms
HS) got the 'Runners on the board in the eighth with an RBI triple to score
Legg. Kevin Younger (So., Bakersfield,
Calif., Liberty HS) followed with
a single that plated Brockmeyer.
Jonathan Johnson led LMU with three hits. Guthrie, Zac
Fujimoto, and Ryan Hawthorne each put up two hits for the Lions.
The series continues Sunday and Monday in Los Angeles at LMU. Both games will get
underway at 3 p.m.
