BAKERSFIELD,
Calif.- No. 17 UC Irvine (27-12)
defeated CSUB (25-14) 11-6 in the middle game of there weekend series Saturday
afternoon at Hardt Field.
The Anteaters scored four runs in the top of the first
highlighted by a Drew Hillman two-RBI double. CSUB made it 4-2 on RBI singles
from Martin Medina (Jr., Ventura, Calif., St. Bonaventure HS) and Cael Brockmeyer (Fr.,
Vineyard Haven, Mass.,
Avon Old Farms HS). With the bases loaded and two outs, Kevin Younger (So., Bakersfield, Calif.,
Liberty HS) chased UCI starter Crosby Slaught with a double that cleared the
bases. CSUB's sixth run came on an Anteaters' error.
Jordan Leyland tied the game 6-6 in the third with a single
that plated two runs. UC Irvine took the lead in the fourth when Sean Madigan
was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Hillman's sacrifice fly later in the
inning gave UCI a two-run advantage. The Anteaters scored a run in the fifth,
seventh, and eighth for the final five-run winning margin.
Hillman went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI's. Brian
Hernandez also posted three hits. Leyland had
two hits and three RBI's. Ryan McIntyre (Jr., Henderson,
Nev., Coronado HS), Andrew Letourneau (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College), Jeremy Rodriguez (Jr., Thousand
Oaks, Calif., Crespi HS), and Medina each charted two
hits for the Roadrunners.
The series concludes Sunday with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
