BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-Seattle (11-17) made 17-of-23 field
goal attempts in the second half as the Redhawks defeated CSUB 73-54 Feb. 26 at
Rabobank Arena.
The Roadrunners (9-17) were led by Donavan Bragg (Sr., Inglewood,
Calif., Serra HS) who scored 17 points, and Rashad Savage (Philadelphia, Pa.,
Odessa JC) who scored eight points and a posted a game-high 14 rebounds. The
Redhawks' Chad Rasmussen shot 8-of-10 from behind the
three-point line as he led all players with a career-high 24 points.
After Garrett Lever scored the first basket of the
game, Cal State Bakersfield went on a 14-3 scoring run over the next four
minutes to open a 14-5 advantage. A three-pointer by Rasmussen started the
Redhawks on the comeback trail, as Seattle U scored the next seven points to
pull within two at 14-12 with 12:10 left in the first half.
Donald Johnson (Jr. Antelope Valley, Calif., Eastern
Arizona CC) hit a three-pointer with 11:42 left before halftime, but that would
prove to be Cal State Bakersfield's last field goal until there were 20 seconds
remaining in the first half. In that span, Seattle U outscored the Roadrunners,
19-3, to open an 11-point lead before Alex Johnson (R-Jr. Toronto, Ontario, Vaughan
Road Academy) ended the field goal drought with 20 seconds left to make the
score 31-22 in the Redhawks' favor at halftime.
Ivan Matip (Fr., Cameroon, Besant Hill School) scored
early in the second half to cut the Redhawk lead to seven, but back-to-back
three-pointers by Carter gave the Redhawks a 13-point advantage. After four
straight points by the Roadrunners, two layups by Jones, three three-pointers
from Rasmussen, and another long distance basket by Carter gave Seattle U a
53-32 lead eight minutes into the second half, and the Redhawks kept making
shots to clinch their largest margin of victory of the season.
For the game, the Roadrunners shot 32.1 percent
(17-of-53) from the field, including 6-of-22 from behind the three-point line,
and 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from the free throw line. Seattle U finished the
night at 50 percent (28-of-56) field goal shooting, including 11-of-20 from
behind the three-point line, and 60 percent (6-of-10) free throw shooting. The
Redhawks won the rebounding battle, 39-33, earned 20 assists for their 28 made
field goals, and took better advantage of turnovers, scoring 24 points off 15
Roadrunner turnovers while Cal State Bakersfield scored only 10 points off 15
Redhawk turnovers.
CSUB heads to Gonzaga Monday night for a 6 p.m. contest.
