LONG BEACH, Calif.-CSUB won the MPSF Men's Swimming
Championships Feb. 26 at the Belmond Olympic Pool. The Roadrunners defeated
second place Pacific by 148 points (647-499). Sophomore Jake Priest (So., Las
Vegas, Nev., Palo Verde HS) was named MPSF Male Swimmer of the Year.
Priest won three events; the 200 IM and 400 IM (both in
NCAA "B" cut times) as well as the 200 butterfly. Priest was also part of CSUB's
winning of 800 freestyle relay. Priest earned the title in the 200 butterfly
Saturday night by swimming a time of 1:49.24.
Evan Vizcarra (Penngrove, Calif., Petaluma HS) was named MPSF
Freshman of the Year after winning the 1650 freestyle (15:56.81) Saturday night.
The MPSF Individual awards were voted upon by the MPSF Coaches.
"I couldn't be any prouder," said CSUB Head Coach Chris
Hansen. "I wouldn't have wanted to do it with any other set of guys than the
ones on my team. To come in, win the team award and take home the individual
honors is nothing short of amazing."
Also winning on the final day of competition was Brian
Martinez (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev., Arbor View HS) who was first in the 200
breaststroke (2:20.02).
CSUB won the final race of the 2011 MPSF Championships when
the 400 freestyle relay of Chris Pipes (Jr., Fresno, Calif., Merced College), Peter
Bardessono (Jr., Elverta, Calif., American River College), Kevin Miller (So.,
Granite Bay, Calif., Granite Bay HS) and Mark Silvius (Jr., Bakersfield,
Calif., Liberty HS) recorded a NCAA "B" cut time of 3:00.13 for the title.
The Roadrunners title Saturday night is CSUB' s first
conference championships (third overall, other two were Pac-10 Wrestling in
1996 and 1999) since CSUB made the transition from Division II to Division I.
