BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-After three straight road games CSUB's
return to the Icardo Center for Wednesday's game with Sacramento State looked
like a nice welcome for the first half, but a furious Sacramento State rally in
the second half coupled with poor Roadrunner shooting turned a blowout into a
dogfight as the Roadrunners (5-2) held on for a 63-60 win at the Icardo Center.
CSUB pulled out to an early 7-0 lead to start the game and
extended their first-half lead to 16 leading 33-17 at the break. But Sacramento
State (3-5) was able to take control of the second-half tempo and limited CSUB's
offensive effectiveness to erase a 21-point deficit and pull within three
points of pulling off the comeback.
The Roadrunners shot a season-low 29 percent in the second
half hitting just 9 of 31 shots from the field but once again used timely
shooting and a key play from point guard Issiah Grayson (Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Southern
Idaho CC) to get their 5th win of the season and the second in a row
at home.
With the 'Runners leading 53-50 with just 1:33 remaining,
Grayson took advantage of an open space in the lane, drove in for the layup and
the foul by Sacramento State's John Dickson. Grayson converted on the free
throw to give CSUB a 56-50 lead. The Hornets however didn't go away, getting to
the foul line in the final minute and taking advantage of a late Roadrunner
turnover with 3.5 seconds remaining to set up a potential game-tying shot. CSUB's
defense however was stellar with Dylan Garrity's attempt with time expiring
missing to the left.
The Roadrunners were led by Tyrone White who scored a
team-high 12 points on 4 of 7 from three point range while Zach Lamb (Jr.,
Norcross, Ga., Miami-Dade CC) added 11 points for the Roadrunners who outrebounded
Sac State 43-35 including 16 offensive rebounds. Rashad Savage (Sr.,
Philadelphia, Penn., Odessa CC), was the Roadrunners leading rebounder with a
season-high 14. Sac State was led by John Dickson who scored 17 second-half
points for a game-high 19 on 6 of 12 shooting and 7 of 8 from the free throw
line where the Hornets had 24 second-half attempts.
The Roadrunners continue their best start at the Division I
level with a set of four games on the road beginning Saturday night at Northern
Arizona. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:35 MST in Flagstaff, Ariz.
