PRINCESS ANNE, Md.
— The CSU Bakersfield Volleyball team came out on the attack and picked up
two wins in the opening day of the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawk
Invitational by defeating Alabama State 3-1 and North Carolina Central 3-0 on
Friday.
The Roadrunners started the
tournament by downing Alabama State 3-1 (25-23, 25-27, 21-25, 25-22) before
sweeping the Eagles 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-18).
"It felt good to take care of business in the second match after a slow start in our first match in the morning," said CSUB head coach Jolene Shepardson. "We are continuing to work on competing consistently. Saturday will be a good test for us."
Sophomore outside hitter
Haleigh Haratyk (Corona, Calif., Centennial HS) dominated the offensive assault
against North Carolina Central with a match-high 15 kills, while also adding 11
digs in her third consecutive double-double performance.
Senior setter Danielle Gong
put up a season-high 34 assists against the Eagles and freshman outside hitter
Saelina Dunn (Long Beach, Calif., Wilson HS) hit 11 kills. CSUB Libero Lauren Holderman (R-So., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) recorded 17 digs.
Haratyk, who is ranked No.
15 in the country in kills in Division I play, continued her fierce attack with
17 kills and also added 11 digs and three services aces against Alabama State.
Gong totaled 26 assists, 11 digs and added three blocks in her second
double-double of the season.
Brittney Hopley (Jr.,
Thornhill, Ontario, Wilfrid Lauer Univ.) put up a season-high 11 kills against
the Hornets, while adding two blocks. Dunn added nine kills and sophomore middle blocker Chelcy Motes (Thatcher, Ariz.,
Thatcher HS) posted four blocks.
The Roadrunners (5-11) will
be back in action in the tournament on Saturday with matches against Hampton at
11 a.m. and the host Hawks at 4 p.m.
