Mexico?s U?20 National Team Survives Roadrunners in Shootout

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSU Bakersfield men's soccer team took the Mexican U–20 National Team, one of the season's toughest scheduled contests, to an extra time shootout Tuesday evening on the Main Soccer Field, but fell in penalty kicks 4–2. The two teams remained scoreless through the 90 minute game and both sides agreed to forego overtime and head straight to penalty kicks to the delight of the crowd of over 1,500. The game was CSUB's second of three exhibition matches during the preseason.

In the penalty kick shootout, the first three players from Mexico converted while senior Alberto Navarro (Delano HS) and Uddie Garcia (Shafter HS) converted to keep the match square. But junior Chris Widdy's (San Pedro HS) and senior Robbie Gouk's (Seattle, Wash./Hazen HS) shots each sailed just wide of the target, giving Mexico the victory.

Both teams had solid scoring opportunities throughout the contest. Freshman Gyasi Zardes (Hawthorne, Calif./Leuzinger HS) and sophomore Jesus Sanchez (Chula Vista, Calif./Castle Park HS) each had a pair of shots for the 'Runners.

Sophomore Eric Shannon (Valencia HS) made three saves in the first half before classmate Shane Ascheri (La Habra, Calif./Troy HS) took over in the second, making one save.

The Roadrunners conclude their preseason schedule tomorrow evening with a 7 p.m. contest against Trinity Western University (Canada) on the Main Soccer Field. The 2010 season kicks off on Wednesday, Sept. 1, against UC Santa Barbara.
