LONG
BEACH, Calif.-Three CSUB men's swimmers turned in top 10 performances on the
final day of the Arena Invitational at Belmont Olympic Pool. Chad McKenzie
(Sr., Durban, South Africa, Limestone College) qualified sixth in the
preliminaries of the 200 breaststroke before coming home seventh in the race. McKenzie
went almost two seconds faster in the finals (2:03.84) than in the prelims. As
a team, the Roadrunners were seventh, finishing ahead of BYU, Utah, and BYU.
Jake
Priest (So., Las Vegas, Nev., Palo Verde HS) placed ninth in the 200 butterfly,
winning his finals' heat in a time of 1:50.65. Mark Silvius (Jr., Bakersfield,
Calif., Liberty HS) won his finals heat in the 100 freestyle, turning in a
ninth place finish (:45.17).
Evan
Vizcarra (Fr., Penngrove, Calif., Petaluma HS) recorded a personal best in the
1650 free (16:14.12) scoring 15th place points along the way. Viscarra entered
the 200 butterfly and won his finals' heat (1:54.01), placing 25th overall. Jay
Jones (Sr., Vancouver, Wash., Mountain View HS) completed the finals of the 200
fly in a time of 1:52.71, good enough for 17th overall.
The
400 freestyle relay of Silvius, Chris Pipes (Jr., Fresno, Calif., Merced
College, Fresno HS),
Beniz
Bilgin (So., Istanbul, Turkey, Istek Belde) placed 28th (1:00.57). Joao Foresto
(Jr., Marila, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Cristol Rei HS), and Priest put up a 3:03.48
which should rank the squad among the top 20 in Division I when the next set of
rankings are released early next week.
"I
couldn't be happier with how we performed this weekend," said CSUB head coach
Chris Hansen. "It was great to see how well Mark and Evan rose to the occasion
on Saturday. Jake and Chad continued to swim at a high level. I believe our
peformances this weekend have helped establish as a favorite at the (MPSF)
conference championships (later this season."
CSUB
heads back into action Dec. 2-4 at the U.S. Short Course Championships in
Columbus, Ohio.
