Phillips Hired as Assistant Coach

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
CSUB women's soccer Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke announced that Melissa Phillips has been hired as an assistant coach for the 2009 season. Phillips was a standout defender for Cal stae Stanislaus, earning Daktronics/CoSida first team All–West Region and Adidas/NSCAA second team All–West Region honors as a senior. She served as team captain her junior and senior seasons and was voted team MVP both years.

Van Dyke recruited Phillips to Cal State Stanislaus in 2005. The next season, Van Dyke took the head coaching position at CSUB while Phillips remained at Stanislaus. In 2009, Phillips graduated with her bachelor degree in physical education with a concentration in health and wellness promotion. She earned the CCAA All-Academic Award three times, maintaining a 3.5 GPA.

“Melissa is a bright, young, eager coach who had a very successful collegiate playing career,” said Van Dyke. “Having recruited and coached Mel for one season at Cal State Stanislaus, I know she has the mentality that will meet and exceed all expectations of an assistant coach. I am thrilled that Mel has joined us and I am excited about my entire coaching staff for the 2009 season.”

Phillips currently resides in Bakersfield and is pursuing her masters of education degree in curriculum and instruction at CSUB. She holds a national E coaching license and coaches the U16 girls soccer team with the Bakersfield Gunners. Phillips graduated from Roseville High School and played for the Placer United club team and the District VI ODP team. She also served as an assistant coach at Hilmar High School and with the Turlock Tornados club soccer team.
